UNRAVEL - Towards enhancing the carbon stocks in forests: Unravelling the wood production potentials under sustainability conditions for Austria
Duration: 2021-2024
Funding: Austrian Climate and Energy Fund
Contact: Rupert Seidl
About
Project management: Prof. Karlheinz Erb, Universität für Bodenkultur Wien
The project explores the option space for wood production under given sustainability targets. For Austria in 2040, 2070 and 2100, it quantifies the wood production potentials that are compatible with targets to preserve carbon sinks and ecosystem services. Hereby, it explicitly takes climate change impacts on forest dynamics, and the high degree of international embeddedness of the Austrian wood system into account, by complementing a territorial with consumption- and income-based perspectives.
The Ecosystem Dynamics and Forest Management group at TUM will provide forest disturbance assessments to the project in order to robustly quantify the C sequestration potentials in Austria.
