Gut zu wissen: The battle for space - How can cities become liveable?
Infotext: It gets hot and crowded in large German cities. On summer days, it can be up to 5 degrees warmer than on the outskirts. More space is needed for people, cyclists and, above all, cooling trees. But space is in short supply. How can this be achieved? In Munich's central district of Schwabing-West, for example: with 156 people per hectare, it is also the most densely populated district in the metropolis, which is not exactly suffering from a declining population anyway. And densification continues apace because there is a lack of living space. This leads to crowding - and stress. Scientists suspect that this is the reason why the number of mental illnesses is higher in large cities than in rural areas. The summer heat in cities is also unhealthy, sometimes even deadly. In 2023, over 3,000 people in Germany died from the heat. Researchers have proposed solutions to this problem: more space for people, for cyclists, for people on foot, more open spaces, more cooling trees. But there is not enough space. Ultimately, the only option is to take something away from cars - parking spaces and lanes. But there is fierce resistance to this. The battle for space in major German cities has begun. More on this in “Gut zu wissen”.
