BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES – INVESTIGATING A COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP FROM AN ETHICAL PERSPECTIVE
Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Kurt Jax, Prof. Dr. Konrad Ott (CAU Kiel)
The concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem services have high significance for ecological applications, and they are often used as synonyms in environmental politics. Unfortunately, their definitions and interactions are far from clear. Thus, the thesis is clarifying these value-based concepts including their relationship based on a appropriate case study.
The case is the cultural ecosystem services of the German Baltic coast in its historical change since 1880 and with respect to biodiversity. The historical perspective allows understanding trends in evaluation of biodiversity and cultural ecosystem services (‚values‘).
