Key words: Community ecology, restoration ecology, functional ecology, conservation, root traits, tropical grassland and savanna, phenology, botany
My overall research since 10 years now, focuses on community ecology, restoration ecology and more recently on functional ecology. My main research themes concern the understanding of community assembly rules, the functioning of tropical grassland and savanna ecosystems and the study of the effects of land use changes, on the structure and functioning of plant communities. I am also interested in the assessment of plant community resilience face to anthropogenic pressures, the analysis and evaluation of ecological restoration techniques; and the understanding of ecological processes that may be limiting for the restoration of these plant communities. I currently use a more functional approach to understand the structure and functioning of tropical herbaceous communities.
So far, my work is done in basic ecology but is also strongly applied to the conservation and restoration of degraded habitats by human actions. My research has been largely done on tropical old-growth grasslands and savannas in Brazil and Democratic Republic of Congo.
My research currently addresses the relationships between vegetation and ecosystem functioning using a functional approach. I use, among other things, root functional traits to evaluate resource acquisition strategies, to analyze the impact of fire on underground biomass and to understand the links between root functional diversity and carbon storage in tropical open physiognomies.
