A Canadian national, he completed an undergraduate degree in Economics and MSc. in Food, Agricultural, and Resource Economics at Guelph University (Ontario, Canada). After working for two years at the International Food Policy Research Institute (Washington D.C.), he completed a PhD within the Lancaster Environment Centre (Lancaster, United Kingdom) focusing on climate mitigation in Tanzania’s dairy sector (circa 2021).
James’ research contributes to understanding complex dynamics within livestock systems in the context of global change and societal needs to improve environmental standards. His past academic and workplace experience includes topics such as climate change mitigation for ruminant livestock in East Africa, farm-level implications of agri-environmental policies in sub-Saharan Africa, and more recently, strategies to reconcile climate change mitigation with economic development for cocoa and palm agroforestry in West Africa.
Within LSYS, James contributes to advance scientific methods for understanding the dynamics of productivity, conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation in livestock systems across the global south.
