Carbon footprint calculator
We provide here estimations of the carbon footprint of the lab for the various publications. We assign for each publication an estimate of the computing power, travels for collaborations, conference presentations and field work, use of glasshouse space,.... We provide also a category of yearly estimate of carbon footprint which is not accounted for in publications. We keep the calculation simple and listed in the table below.

Korfmann et al. 2022 BioRxiv | 12 | This project used a Tesla V100-SXM2-32GB (TDP of 300W) GPU with a carbon efficiency of 0.432 kgCO²eq/kWh for a cumulative estimated computation time of approximately three months (or 2190 hours). Total emissions are calculated to be 283.82 kgCO²eq. The time frame includes model hyperparameter optimization, debugging, training and evaluation. All experiments were conducted using the de.NBI compute cloud. For collaboration, a travel with two-way flight from Munich to London was taken. According to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is 210.8 kg CO2 per passenger. |
Korfmann et al. MoL Ecol 2023 | 6 | Simulations on one node at full capacity for a week (168 hours) would be equivalent of 7.62 kg CO2 eq. We used 6 nodes = 45.72 kgs CO2, time 3 weeks =137.16 kgs CO2. As part of the Erasmus exchange program, one co-author traveled by car from Paris (France) at 129,9 gCO2/km = 219 kg CO2.
